Hasper, New Delhi, Week 3

Namaste!

I've just come off a fantastic weekend visiting Jaipur and Agra! The Taj Mahal was stunning. It was built by the emperor Shah Jahan to honor of his third wife, who died in child birth. Our guide didn't know all that much about the history of the mausoleum, but he was able to show us a lot about the architecture. The building was constructed with many optical allusions, and contains layers of symbolism. We also visited the palace quarters. Only men are allowed in the Mosque, so we could only see it from the outside. Selena and I were also able to see some artisan work in carpets and marble! The labor and dedication involved in the creative work was stunning and inspiring. The descendants of the original Taj Mahal artisans are still at work in the city.

In Jaipur, we were hit by monsoon weather once again. The roads were too flooded to travel, so we were not able to see the forts as intended but stayed in the city and visited the city palace and museum. We also befriended some local textile artisans, who showed us their shop and helped us find a good place to eat and have chai. Many people in India have been so helpful and generous.
They also explained to us more about the festival of Rakhi, which is going on this weekend. The festival dates back to a war tradition: as the brothers left to defend their people in battle, the sisters would tie sacred threads around their wrists. Today, it celebrates the bond between siblings.

Work at the school has become very busy! On the 15th of August, the school and community center is putting on a celebration for Independence Day, and the kids will be participating in a performance art. Celebrating the holiday is a brilliant way to bring the community closer together. The dance teacher has been working non-stop with students of all ages, and the level of focus that the kids are displaying is so impressive. Everyone is excited, and I can see the pride on the teachers' faces as the kids succeed. I'm playing my "little guitar" as accompaniment for the many vocal performances.

My fingers are quite sore, and luckily I haven't broken any strings. The event will be a wonderful time for the community and the kids.
