James-Week 5-Ankara

This weekend I went to Pamukkale and Denizli in Turkey's southwest.  The area is famous for its calcite terraces and mineral spring water that form the famous white and blue landscape.  Next to the calcite terraces were ruins of an ancient city from Greek times.  Many of the inscriptions on the tombs were still intact and the main road was still very visible.  The area is quite touristy and much of the food and entrance fees are a little steep for the budget-minded traveler.  Overall it was a very interesting experience.
The main city, Denizli, is about 500,000 people set in an alluvial plain surrounded by tall mountains.  It reminded me of a Turkish version of Knoxville, TN or any other large Appalachian city within the USA.  Apparently the town is famous for its textiles but in my perusing of several shops I found nothing of interest.

  1. James,

Thanks for posting the title with your name, location and week # abroad. I'm happy that you were able to travel around a bit. The Pamukkale sound really interesting. Is there any other place in the world like that? When something is so unique, you have to expect tourism and price hikes. I guess it's the price you have to pay!

Did you get in the mineral pool? How is work?

    Best,
    Tammy
