Alyssa Tender; week 2 Rabat

This week was good; there is another volunteer at my organization now. She is getting maters is HIV program design and is fluent in French, so having her here has been helpful. At work we have been going out around Rabat and talking with Migrants about HIV prevention.  Additionally we have been running statistics on the migrants who come into the office. We have been trying to figure out the average age of the migrants, their gender, what services or products they want to help the organization tailor their campaigns to the needs of the community.

This week was also fun because I got to travel around Morocco. It was my first time traveling outside of Rabat (expect trying to get from the Casablanca airport to Rabat). We went to Casablanca, saw the beautiful Hassan II Mosque and ate at Ricks Café (which is based off the Café in the movie Casablanca).

We also went to Fes. Fes was great! We had an amazing tour guide so we got to see the tanneries, traditional Moroccan carpet weaving, silk weaving, women making oils and spices.

  1. Alyssa,

That's really great that another volunteer has joined your efforts. It's even better that she is fluent in French- very helpful! When you go around the community are you easily "accepted" by who you are speaking with? Have you run into any problems?

A few interns have posted about Rick's cafe. I'm not familiar with the movie, so I looked it up online. That's awesome! Fes looks very interesting. I heard it smells bad at the tanneries. Do the oils smell good?

Looking forward to your next post. Don't forget to include some pictures of you at work (if possible!).

    Best,
    Tammy
